Stainless Steel 347/H

High-performance 347/H stainless steel delivers an excellent combination of corrosion resistance and tensile strength in high-temperature operating environments. At the same time, it offers important benefits for weldability and ductility.

At Arbor/Metals Inc., we provide tight-tolerance 347/H stainless steel products in several configurations, including heavy-duty pipes. Our quality is outstanding.

What Is 347/H Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel type 347/H is a stabilized austenitic alloy. It contains significant chromium and nickel for improved tensile strength and corrosion resistance. A combination of columbium and tantalum stabilizes the alloy, avoiding intergranular embrittlement at high temperatures.

The chemical composition of 347/H stainless steel is:

  • Iron: Balance
  • Chromium: 17% to 20%
  • Nickel: 9% to 13%
  • Molybdenum: 3% to 4%
  • Carbon: 04% to 0.10%
  • Manganese: 5% to 2%
  • Columbium/tantalum combination: 1% max

There are also trace amounts of silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus.

How Does Stainless Steel 347/H Compare to Type 347?

Type 347/H has a higher carbon content than type 347. This improves the alloy’s tensile strength in high-heat applications, reducing the risk of creep.

What Are the Advantages of 347/H Grade Stainless Steel?

One of the biggest reasons to choose stainless steel 347/H is to avoid carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion, problems that are common with high-temperature operating conditions. In general, grade 347/H offers:

  • Good oxidation resistance
  • As much corrosion protection as popular grade 304
  • Outstanding creep resistance
  • Strong performance in temperatures of 800 degrees to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Excellent mechanical properties, such as vibration resistance and ductility

This specialized stainless steel offers excellent weldability and workability, but it still retains the corrosion resistance that makes austenitic stainless steel popular for manufacturing applications.

What Are Common Applications for 347/H Stainless Steel Products?

Due to the increased resistance of this alloy to embrittlement caused by welding, it’s an ideal choice for applications where metal thickness and weldability are important factors. For example:

  • Process piping
  • Boiler tubes
  • Heat exchanger tubes
  • Steam pipes
  • Exhaust systems
  • Fluid catalytic cracking units

At Arbor/Metals Inc., we’re known as a 347/H stainless steel supplier for corrosion-resistant, high-temperature piping. That said, we also supply alloy 347/H heat-resistant stainless steel plate to give manufacturers additional flexibility.

Which Industries Use Stainless Steel Type 347/H?

Alloy 347/H works with all types of resistance welding and fusion welding. Its mechanical properties excel in:

  • Oil and gas refining
  • Petrochemical manufacturing
  • Automotive production
  • Aerospace parts
  • High-temperature general manufacturing
